The UML Career & Co-op Center has seen a significant increase in reach on Instagram since implementing the use of reels. To keep up with current social media trends, in the spring our office implemented the use of video content on Instagram, particularly in our efforts to prepare students for the first in-person career fairs since Fall 2019. Compared to Fall 2021, we saw an increase in engagement on Instagram during the Spring 2022 semester as reflected below:

•        +371% accounts reached

•        +126% accounts engaged

•        +5.5% total followers

Our most successful reel had 3,340 plays as compared to our most successful static post with a reach of 512 accounts (a difference of 652%). Our story content demonstrated significantly less reach than reels or static posts (most successful reaching 201 accounts). Thematically, we saw that content featuring students and content recapping events performed the best on Instagram. While quality reels can be more time-consuming to create than graphic images, implementing this change has allowed us to more effectively provide career development education, to promote events, and to brand our office as both professional and approachable. Based on lessons learned from this semester, we have shifted our strategy for next semester to focus predominantly on video content for tips/education, with some static content to promote and recap events. We will be hiring a student intern to manage the video recording and editing, and we will aim to feature students – particularly those involved in campus – in each reel. We have entered a time when it feels that we must be on social media. To make that presence meaningful it’s critical to reach students not just where they are, but how they are engaging.
